Einheimisch war bei ihnen nur die Poesie der Urbanit\u00e4t, und mit der einzigen Satire haben sie das Gebiet der Kunst bereichert. Es nahm dieselbe unter jedem Meister eine neue Gestalt an, indem sich der gro\u00dfe alte Styl der r\u00f6mischen Geselligkeit und des r\u00f6mischen Witzes bald die klassische K\u00fchnheit des Archilochos und der alten Kom\u00f6die aneignete, bald aus der sorglosen Leichtigkeit eines Improvisatore zur saubersten Eleganz eines korrekten Hellenen bildete, bald mit stoischem Sinn und im gediegnetesten Styl zur gro\u00dfen alten Weise der Nationen zur\u00fcckkehrte, bald sich der Begeisterung des Hasses \u00fcberlie\u00df. Durch die Satire erscheint in neuem Glanz, was noch von der Urbanit\u00e4t der ewigen Roma im Catullus lebt, im Martialis, oder sonst einzeln und zerstreut.
